Photo Arts Collective Meeting
The next meeting of the Photo Arts Collective will take place this Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 PM at Kehler Liddell Gallery, 873 Whalley Ave. in the Westville section of New Haven.

This month, we are honored to host our own Peter Craig, whose graceful and evocative work has graced the New Haven, New York and New England art scene for nearly 40 years now. Join in the presentation and conversation as he discusses his distinctive work and vision.

A few words about Peter and his work:

Mystery...

A word that can describe life in general, it is also what I try to infuse into my photographs. The sense of a dream half remembered or an odd moment when the surreal takes hold. I always endeavor to create on film and print a subtlety that pulls the viewer gently into my world, an outwardly normal world, but one that, under longer scrutiny, manifests a slightly skewed reality. Whether it is a hand-tinted print, an image transfer, a “straight” silver print or digital print, may it be of a silent grove or of steps that lead to an unknown destination, each print is above all my visual reminder of the quiet state of strangeness I often find while “roaming” with a camera.

I studied photography at New York University and have been using it as a means of expression since 1970. My work has been exhibited nationally and has been published in various magazines. I have written numerous articles on photography which have appeared in Popular Photography and Petersen's Photographic magazines. From 1994 I was on the faculty at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven.

So set aside the date and time and come join us for an evening of engaging conversation and remarkable imagery this Thursday.

No, Seriously at the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents No, Seriously, in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery, 70 Audubon St., 2nd floor, New Haven. This exhibition will be on display from December 14th, 2012 until February 1st, 2013. There will be an opening reception - that will also serve as a holiday party for the arts community - on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

No, Seriously will feature works by Ian Applegate, Beans Cunningham, Raheem Nelson, and Vin Paneccasio.

The exhibition is sure to enliven the imagination with its whimsy, satire and artistry. While the artists come from varied backgrounds and have different styles, ranging from marker drawings to iPad renderings, the tradition of animation ties them all together. This winter show was curated by Debbie Hesse and Steve Olsen.

December 7- January 31
Artist Reception: Friday, December 7, 5-8pm

Reynolds Fine Art is pleased to present Vista: A Study of the Land. This group exhibition will feature the work of nine national artists whose approaches to landscape painting are as diverse as their subject.

Vista is a glimpse of nature as translated through the eyes and hands of nine unique artists. Tranquil, ethereal landscapes are juxtaposed with ones that show signs of a vigorous, ever changing world. While one artist may employ the practice of landscape painting as a retreat from modern life, to stand in awe of natural beauty and recall the ideologies of past masters of the genre, another artist looks at man’s imprint on the land and embraces both the tension and harmony created. Each scene, however, captures obsession and memory in paint.

This opening is free and open to the public, an will coincide with the Ninth Square first Friday event, Shine On9 (www.on9newhaven.com).

Curatorial Tour and Discussion with Christopher Joy
Saturday, December 8th from 2:30-3:30pm
Giampietro Gallery

Please join curator and co-founder of Gorky's Granddaughter Christopher Joy for a tour and discussion of "LOOKOUTOUTLOOK." The show features the works of Gregory Amenoff, Jake Berthot, Clint Jukkala, Thomas Nozkowski, Peter Ramon, Lucy Mink, Becky Yazdan, Dushko Petrovich, William Lustenader, Melissa Brown and Sharon Horvath.

Landscapes achieve intuitive symbolic meanings: Hysterical because of the weight and stillness of an impassible mountain of mist. Someone told me that there is no escape from history and memory. When the sun shines, it just makes claustrophobia clearer. Perhaps standing on your head would help. Or better yet, superimpose your head on the landscape, so your lower jaw sits at your feet. As high-functioning gray matter approaches infinity, it reaches toward the line. Escape to Bill Gates' perfect field. Is there awkwardness in nature, or is awkwardness merely a cultural phenomenon.

Long Wharf Theatre Serves As Toys for Tots Drop-Off Center
Long Wharf Theatre will be a Toys for Tots drop-off center from November 28 through December 20, coinciding with the theatre’s run of The Killing of Sister George.

Members of the community can drop new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes at Long Wharf Theatre’s Claire Tow Stage in the C. Newton Schenck III Theatre. Marines pick up these toys and store them in central warehouses where the toys are sorted by age and gender. At Christmas, the Marines, with the assistance of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and other local community agencies, distribute the toys to the less fortunate children of the community.

According to Toys for Tots, the objectives of the organization are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

The drop-off location at the theatre will be open from 10 am to 5 pm daily. For more information about Long Wharf Theatre’s 2012-13 season call 203-787-4282 or visit www.longwharf.org. For more information about the Toys for Tots program, visit www.toysfortots.org.

Rare Glass Harmonica Concert
Invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761, the glass harmonica (aka “glass armonica”) was named after “armonia,” the Italian word for harmony. This unique instrument features a series of glass bowls graduated in size to produce music. Its tones are both haunting and beautiful. For the holiday season, the New Haven Museum’s Volunteers-in-Action present a rare glass harmonica concert featuring Vera Meyer on Sunday, December 9, at 2:00 pm at the New Haven Museum. Refreshments from Chestnut Fine Foods will be served. Admission is $20 per person; $15 for Museum Members; free for children 12 and under. Pre-register at (203) 562-4183 x10 or rsvp@newhavenmuseum.org.

The glass harmonica was popular among European monarchs, with Marie Antoinette having taken lessons as a child. About 300 compositions have been originally written for glass harmonica, including works by Mozart and Beethoven.

Vera Meyer discovered glass music in 1983 when she happened upon street musician Jim Turner playing his 70 musical wine glasses on the street in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. She was so captivated by the sound of the instrument that she immediately worked to acquire her own glass instrument. Vera is co-founder of Glass Music International, an organization that promotes a renaissance of glass music around the world, after 150 years of obscurity for the instrument. Vera wishes to dedicate all future concerts to the memory of Gerhard, her friend and mentor.

The New Haven Museum, founded in 1862 as the New Haven Colony Historical Society, is located in downtown New Haven at 114 Whitney Avenue. For more information, contact Michelle Cheng, Director of Education, at (203) 562-4183 ext. 11 or education@newhavenmuseum.org.

Fun, Free Family Holiday Opera in New Haven
The Bethesda Music Series is thrilled to once again present the family-friendly holiday opera Amahl and the Night Visitors at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 450 Whitney Avenue, New Haven, on Sunday, December 9 at 7:00pm. The one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1951, by the NBC Television Theater. Amahl, which features a child in the lead role, is a perfect introduction to opera for children and families. Front rows are reserved for children. The event is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be collected with all proceeds going to the Immanuel Baptist Shelter in New Haven. Donations will be partially matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Amahl and the Night Visitorsis a story of a poor shepherd boy's encounter with three kings and the miraculous healing of his crippled leg when he offers his crutch as a gift to the holy child. This opera’s charming mix of tuneful melody, dancing rhythms, delightful choruses, humor, and poignancy makes this work immediately accessible to audiences of all ages and musical tastes. Just under an hour long, Amahl, performed by opera students from Western Connecticut State University, directed by Margaret Astrup, has become an annual tradition for the Bethesda Music Series. This year’s cast features 12-year-old Lucas Hernandez of Hamden in the role of Amahl.

December 8: Washboard Slim & The Blue Lights

The Grateful Dead's Bob Weir put it very simply: "For me jug band music is the mud my toes are planted in."

Honor it! Washboard Slim and the Bluelights is one of the few genuine roots bands that can captivate an audience under 30. Their recent performances at the legendary Toad's Place in New Haven with Shakedown demonstrate the all-age appeal of their music. The 21st century jug band revival is in full swing and the Bluelights, representing Connecticut, are the first band of its genre to appear at the renowned International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The Bluelights are the real deal, using only the jug and washtub bass to provide the foundation of this energetic music.
