Dear audubon,
Have you liked our Facebook page yet? Our official school page has links to videos of Juilliard performances, photos of events, stories in The Juilliard Journal and more! And be sure to follow us on YouTube and Twitter, too.

Because of the winter holidays, there will be no January newsletter ... we'll touch base with you again in early February. Juilliard wishes all our friends and supporters a joyous holiday season.

Remembering Elliott Carter

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and former Juilliard faculty member Elliott Carter was 103 when he died on November 5, yet his death seemed to catch many off guard. He had been a major voice in American music for such a long time that, as one Facebook post said, "we thought he'd live forever." The Journal asked several Juilliard community members who knew Carter to share their memories of the man who, as The New York Times wrote in its obituarty, was "one of the most important and enduring voices in contemporary music." Read the tributes.

4 New Dance Works Are Unveiled
Photos by Nan Melville

For Juilliard Dance, the holiday season is heralded not by performances of The Nutcracker but by the New Dances series (Dec. 12-16), for which four choreographers create new works, one for each class, and then unveil them to the public. This year, the honors went to (clockwise from top left) Camille A. Brown (working on the freshmen), Emery LeCrone (sophomores), Susan Shields (juniors), and Jarek Cemerek (seniors). Read about them in The Juilliard Journal.

The 2013 Focus! festival ("The British Renaissance") celebrates the flowering of composition in the United Kingdom since World War II, a cultural triumph that should "put to rest any lingering questions about British musicality," writes festival director Joel Sachs in a special Journal feature. Focus! opens on Jan. 25 with Sachs leading the New Juilliard Ensemble in music by Jonathan Harvey, Alexander Goehr, Helen Grime (a young Scottish composer), John Woolrich, and Colin Matthews. From Jan. 28 to 31, there will be chamber and solo concerts. And making his Juilliard debut, Mark Wigglesworth closes the proceedings conducting the Juilliard Orchestra on Feb. 1. To kick off this celebration of British music, Juilliard Opera will present one-act operas by Britten and Vaughan Williams, Dec. 9-13.

  Like Father, Like Son
Armand and Behzad Ranjbaran

Father and son Behzad and Armand Ranjbaran share more than DNA—both are composers and Juilliard alums. Behzad (right), a faculty member since 1991, was born and raised in Iran. His music is rooted in 20th-century Romanticism and receives widespread attention with frequent performances around the country. Armand, who graduated in 2011, has recently had compositions performed by the Allentown (Pa.) and Peoria (Ill.) symphonies and also at Brooklyn's Bargemusic. His current focus is on Operation Superpower, an educational, interactive opera that has an anti-bullying message aimed at kids. Read a Q&A with this dynamic pair.
