The Wait is Over!

Downton Abbey, Season 3

The Great War is over and a long-awaited engagement is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate for a third thrilling season. With the return of its all-star cast plus guest star Academy Award®-winner Shirley MacLaine, Downton Abbey, Season 3 airs over seven Fridays on Rhode Island PBS beginning Friday, January 18 at 9 p.m.

But fans of the international television sensation can get a sneak peek of the new season before the series makes its American television debut.

Rhode Island PBS and The Park Theatre in Cranston are partnering to present a free public screening of the first hour of the new season on Thursday, January 3, at The Park Theatre Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts, 848 Park Avenue in Cranston.

The pre-screening party is sold out (thank you!) but there are tickets available for the free public screening at 7:30 p.m. The limited-seating tickets must be picked up at the Park Theatre box office in advance of the January 3 show. Please call or visit the box office to check for availability (401-467-7275)

Guests are asked to bring non-perishable food items or canned goods on the night of the show, in a post-holiday food drive to benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Collection boxes for food donations will be located in the Park Theatre lobby.

Written and created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey won an impressive six Primetime Emmy® Awards and a Golden Globe® in its first season. Recent honors for Season 2 include 16 Primetime Emmy® nominations, multi-category nominations from the Critics' Choice Awards and from the Television Critics Association. Viewers were no less passionate, with 17.1 million tuning in across the seven episodes, making Downton Abbey, Season 2 the most-watched Masterpiece series on record.

The Dust Bowl - a film by Ken Burns

The Dust Bowl The Dust Bowl, a Film by Ken Burns chronicles the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, in which the frenzied wheat boom of the "Great Plow-Up," followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s, nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation.

Vivid interviews with twenty-six survivors of those hard times, combined with dramatic photographs and seldom seen movie footage, bring to life stories of incredible human suffering and equally incredible human perseverance. It is also a morality tale about our relationship to the land that sustains us-a lesson we ignore at our peril.

The Dust Bowl, a Film by Ken Burns premieres January 3 at 8 p.m., and concludes the following week on January 10 at 8 p.m. For more information about The Dust Bowl, visit the PBS Web site.

NetWorks 2012

Five years ago, a unique Rhode Island arts project launched through collaboration between Joseph Chazan, M.D. and Umberto Crenca, Artistic Director of AS220. "NetWorks" was created to document, celebrate, and foster the richly creative and diverse Rhode Island artistic community. Each year since its launch in 2008, the project has created an archive of video and photographic profiles that are enriched by museum and gallery exhibits, catalogues, and panel discussions.

This January, NetWorks 2012 debuts twelve new video portraits of exceptional Rhode Island artists. Each portrait in the NetWorks project introduces the viewer to an artist's work, process, and sources of inspiration, in fewer than ten minutes.

Rhode Island PBS is pleased to present the two-part NetWorks 2012 as Rhode Island Stories logo part of its ongoing series, Rhode Island Stories. Part one of NetWorks 2012 airs on Saturday, January 5 at 7 p.m. The one-hour program profiles Kate Blacklock, Brian Chippendale, Wendy Edwards, Richard Fishman, Lucas Foglia, and Corey Grayhorse.

Part two of NetWorks 2012 airs on Saturday, January 12 at 7 p.m., and profiles Bunny Harvey, Tayo Heuser, Eugene Lee, Meg Little, Jane Masters, and John Udvardy.

Networks 2012 is produced by Richard Goulis. Executive producer for the NetWorks project is Joseph A. Chazan, M.D.

Call the Midwife Special on January 8

Call the MidwifeRhode Island PBS airs a special holiday episode of the critically acclaimed British drama Call the Midwife on Tuesday, January 8 at 10 p.m. with rebroadcast on Friday, January 11 at 1 p.m.

In this special, Nurse Jenny Lee and newly married Chummy are hard at work during their first Christmas in Nonnatus House.

As nurses and nuns minister to an abandoned newborn and search for the mother, and Jenny tries to find the children of an elderly vagrant, Chummy plans an ambitious nativity play. In true Chummy fashion, mishaps ensue.

PBS announced a second season of Call the Midwife, coming to Rhode Island PBS later this year!

Call The Midwife stars Jessica Raine as Jenny Lee, Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne, Pam Ferris as Sister Evangelina, Miranda Hart* (see additional story below) as Chummy, Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, Helen George as Trixie Franklin, Bryony Hannah as Cynthia Miller, Laura Main as Sister Bernadette, Cliff Parisi as Fred and Vanessa Redgrave as the voice of mature Jennifer.

Miranda Hart (Call the Midwife) in her own series

Miranda If you like Chummy in Call the Midwife, check out her own comedy series, Miranda, on Tuesday nights at 9:30 p.m. on Rhode Island PBS!

It doesn't matter what Miranda attempts in life, whether it's dating or simply dealing with her overbearing mother, she always seems to fall flat, quite literally.
