To Know How to Suggest

Attitude counts for a lot these days..........even a positive atti-tude!

How To Suggest

NUMBER: 3418
QUOTATION: To know how to suggest is the great art of teaching. To attain it we must be able to guess what will interest; we must learn to read the childish soul as we might a piece of music. Then, by simply changing the key, we keep up the attraction and vary the song.

ATTRIBUTION: Henri-Frédéric Amiel (1821–1881), Swiss philosopher, poet. Journal Intime, entry for Nov. 16, 1864 (1882), trans. by Mrs. Humphry Ward (1892).
BIOGRAPHY: Columbia Encyclopedia.

The above quotation and all of its accompanying pedigree 'suggests' something quite extraordinary. It suggests that suggestion is an art in and of itself. A persuasive thing the teacher- "Thing?"- well, you know what I man, "thing" as in "Force".

Let's make ourselves a pact- write down one positive thing you would like to suggest about more Arts int he public schools, and place it where you teach. When you tire of it, send it to a colleague or friend in the Arts, and write yourself a new one. Positivity and tenacity are your shields in this arts-starved world, are they not? OK- start acting as if it will all work out, because we are on the move and all things will work out- you'll see!
Tenacity, stick-to-it-ive-ness; these are your best friends. Use them for our common goal "Excellence in Public Arts Education", or whatever tag-line we choose to use. Do it today, to bring it (them?) into school when it re-opens. You can use anything from heartsinthearts.com, I'd be happy to help. Send it in for other to see and potentially use- put it in the forum "write here" and we'll create a date base of positivity, not such a bad thing...KSA Article Manager module by by George! Software.
