Choate Rosemary Hall Print Collection
Choate Rosemary Hall Print Collection on Exhibit Through February 24

The Paul Mellon Arts Center will stage an exhibition of works by artist Emilio Sanchez ’39 and Japanese woodblock prints from the collection of Ted Marks ’60 from January 9 through February 24. The Arts Center is located on the campus of Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. The gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. when school is in session, and is free of charge.

Internationally renowned artist Emilio Sanchez (1921-1999) was born in Cuba. He was a member of The Choate School’s Class of 1939 and began his artistic training at the Art Students League in 1944 when he moved to New York City. His early works of the 1950s are stylized and figurative, depicting views of New York and the tropical landscapes of his native Cuba. In the 1960s his works became significantly more abstract and he began to develop his well-known paintings of houses and architectural themes. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he further explored architectural themes by traveling to countries around the Mediterranean. In the 1990s Sanchez’s attention focused more on New York urban scenes of storefronts, garages and skyscrapers.

Ted Marks, Class of 1960, and his wife, Marcia Regnier Marks, were avid collectors of the 20th century Japanese school of art called sosaku-hanga (literally creative woodblock prints). The couple lived in Asia from 1970-1980, spending seven years in Japan where Ted was a foreign correspondent for United Press International (UPI). In 2010, Marks and his wife donated these prints to Choate Rosemary Hall. The leading artists in this movement, whose works are represented in this exhibition, are Koshiro Onchi (1891-1955) and Gen Yamaguchi (1896-1976). They were instrumental in moving the Japanese art world from Ukiuyo-e (floating world) prints to a more creative style of art.
Exhibition by Miller & Morgio
Sharon R. Morgio
Sharon R. Morgio
Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library hosts Exhibition by Miller and Morgio

Stained glass artist Pat Miller of Branford and painter Sharon R. Morgio of West Haven will show their work in an exhibition titled A Moment's Notice from January 6 through 30, 2013 in the Keyes Gallery of the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library in Stony Creek.

Morgio works primarily in watercolor and water-based media, painting subjects from nature as well as some figural, urban and architectural themes. For the past several years she has focused on painting birds, attempting to capture their energy and essence through a loose watercolor approach.

Miller has been exploring ways to depict the "nature of things" through her stained glass art. Many of Pat’s works in this exhibition offer a view of a seemingly discrete point, frozen in time, of an otherwise constantly changing scene. They represent a personal exploration of the qualities of water, as well as its capacity to invigorate, transport, soothe, and nurture.

Opening reception on Sunday, January 6 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The library is located at 146 Thimble Islands Road, in the Stony Creek section of Branford. Library hours: Mon.-Thurs. 10-8, Fri.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. 1-4. Please call ahead to determine if gallery will be available for viewing, as it is used for various functions and meetings. Conversation with Creators of January Joiner
Associate Artistic Director Eric Ting will join playwright Laura Jacqmin for a discussion about her new play January Joiner: A Weight Loss Horror Comedy at RJ Julia Booksellers on Monday, January 7.

The event is free and begins at 7 pm at the store, located at 768 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT. Reservations can be made here: http://www.rjjulia.com/conversation-creators-january-joiner-weight-loss-horror-comedy-17

The play runs on Long Wharf Theatre’s Stage II from January 9 through February 10. In this modern age, when we are barraged with rail thin models in magazines, “miracle” cleanses and fad diets, January Joiner asks, why can’t we just be happy with ourselves? Alternately hilarious, moving and chilling, this new comedy shows us that what appears in the mirror isn’t always what it seems.

Inspired to write the play by events in her family life, Jacqmin blends elements of horror and comedy in an effort to depict the struggles of real people dealing with change, in both themselves and their loved ones.
Family-Friendly Program at the New Haven Museum
Much can be said about a painting—information on the artist, the style, the content. Children, along with adults, can discover quite a bit upon looking closely at a painting. The New Haven Museum acquired View of New Haven from Fair Haven Heights by Leopold Schierholz in 2012. This c. 1860 painting illustrates a broad, sweeping view of New Haven and its harbor, filled with countless details that together tell the story of what New Haven was like in the middle of the nineteenth century.

The New Haven Museum and Schooner Inc. present a special family-friendly program inspired by the new painting on Sunday, January 6, 2013 (snow date: January 13) from 2-3 PM at the Museum, located at 114 Whitney Avenue in New Haven. Join Captain Tommy Seda and his crew to learn about the amazing world of historical sailing ships, as revealed by the unique painting. Then, children will use their new skills and build and decorate wooden sailboats of their own during the second half of the program. Admission is free. Space is limited. Pre-register at (203) 562-4183 ext. 11 or education@newhavenmuseum.org. Please note that this program is best for children over the age of 5.

Captain Tommy Seda is a native New Yorker who found his love of tall ships at a young age. He has been working onboard tall ships for over 20 years and his understanding of Long Island Sound from a Captain's perspective runs leagues deep. Tommy's friendly face and good nature make him a Schooner favorite. Schooner Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and personal growth by providing educational experiences in marine science, sailing, and the history of Long Island Sound and its watershed.

The New Haven Museum, founded in 1862 as the New Haven Colony Historical Society, is located in downtown New Haven at 114 Whitney Avenue. For more information, please contact Michelle Cheng, Director of Education, at (203) 562-4183 ext. 11 or education@newhavenmuseum.org.
